Reddit Taps into AI Goldmine 💼

Reddit, in its IPO prospectus, revealed it had made $203 million from licensing its data to AI vendors, with agreements expected to generate a minimum of $66.4 million in revenue for 2024.

While specific AI companies licensing Reddit's data weren't named, OpenAI and possibly Google are speculated to be among them. Reddit's decision to monetize its vast repository of posts and comments marks a strategic move, especially as AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini look to the web for data to train on.

This approach by content platforms aligns with the broader trend of seeking compensation for their data used in training AI technologies amidst increasing legal scrutiny over data usage rights.

Chrome Unveils AI Writing Assistant 📝

Google Chrome introduces a new AI writing generator powered by its Gemini AI model. Originally a feature in Gmail, this tool now extends its capabilities across the web, allowing users to generate or rewrite text in any text field.

Currently in an experimental phase, it's available in English for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. The AI tool is designed for crafting short-form content and adjusts its suggestions based on the webpage context.

However, user data, including text and URL, will be shared with Google under its privacy policy for the improvement of this feature, which involves human review.

Arc's 'Pinch-to-Summarize' Feature🤏

Arc browser's new feature, "pinch-to-summarize," uses AI to create concise summaries of web pages with a unique pinching gesture.

While the gesture and transition effects are praised for their innovative interaction and aesthetic, the feature's accuracy in generating summaries is inconsistent. It struggles with languages other than English and sometimes omits crucial information or provides robotic summaries.

Concerns arise about its impact on journalism and web content creation, as inaccurate summaries may mislead users.

Arc aims to improve the feature and considers sharing summaries with source links to drive traffic to original articles. Take a look at how to feature works 👇️
