Lattice CEO: “We need to have this conversation”
Lattice CEO Sarah Franklin sees AI as a game-changing technology for businesses, leading the company to pioneer a system for managing AI tools within the workplace.
In its present form, this system is designed to oversee the onboarding, training, goal setting, and performance management of AI. Here are some key points:
Clear distinction: Lattice introduced a new type of employee record specifically for AI tools, ensuring they are coded and represented differently in organizational charts than human employees.
Accountability: The initiative aims to maintain transparency and hold AI accountable, with a human supervisor always responsible for overseeing AI tools.
Governance: This approach includes setting clear guidelines and governance structures to manage AI as it integrates into the workforce.
While all of this sounds great on the surface, the announcement sparked criticism on LinkedIn, with many questioning whether Lattice was equating AI tools to human employees.
In response, Lattice paused the deployment, with Franklin clarifying that the intent was never to humanize AI but to ensure responsible oversight.
She emphasized, “The big misunderstanding was that AI is human, and that is absolutely the exact opposite intent of the innovation… We wanted to ensure that as AI enters the workforce, it is done responsibly and with clear oversight.”
Our Thoughts: We like that Lattice took the initiative, but its misstep highlights the need for responsible AI integration.
